Bill Oddie’s Bankwatch
Forcing HSBC to change their sustainability policy
It was hardly a surprise when Global Witness told us that HSBC was discarding its ethics, and even its own sustainability rules, to invest in logging companies in Sarawak. So we created this video with Bill Oddie to help bring them to account and change their policy.
In the face of mounting pressure, CEO Stuart Gulliver agreed to meet personally with Bill Oddie and Global Witness. HSBC was bankrolling illegal and unethical logging companies in the Sarawak region of Malaysia, which directly contravened HSBC’s own code of ethics. Global Witness published a report on the topic (accessible here).
Our video drove people to a petition to drive public awareness and action on this issue which resulted in HSBC calling in independent organisations to reassess their sustainability policy.<< Back to work
